Sunset Festival
Picture yourself relaxing on a hilltop, watching the sun sink slowly into the sea.

Twinkling lights spread across the city below. Add to that delicious BBQ, good company and live music!

That’s what’s being offered on Mt. Yashima every summer on Fridays and Saturdays from around July 20 to about September 8 every year. This is one of the few places in Japan where you can enjoy spectacular views of the sunset over the sea simultaneously with views of the city lights at night. Views like this…

According to this kind gentleman who was preparing the charcoal for the BBQ braziers,

his shop and restaurant has been offering sunset BBQ for 7 years, with a high repeater rate. The changing sky and scenery provides so much entertainment. Of course you can enjoy the view without dinner, too, and there were plenty of spectators who had fallen under nature’s spell.

The sky was so clear we could see all the way to Mt. Daisen, a volcanic peak on the Japan Sea side of Honshu. (It’s the pale hump in the far back middle of the photo below.)

Recently, various groups promoting the revival of Yashima and nearby areas have banded together to offer concerts and other events (admission free) during the same period. When I went up on Saturday, the place was very lively with a local festival that included flamenco shows, a small band and traditional bon dancing.

Friendly members of the local PTA make the festival fun for kids.
The last big event is a tsugaru-jamisen concert on September 7. Rather than sweltering down in the city, try escaping up the mountain to enjoy the cooler air along with both natural and mandmade entertainment.

To allow people to enjoy their beer without worrying about driving, a shuttle bus (JPY100 one-way) is provided between Kotoden Yashima Station and the top of Yashima on Friday and Saturday nights from July 20-September 8. Buses leave Yashima station at 17:50, 18:30, 19:30 and 20:30, and leave the mountaintop at 18:10, 19:10, 20:10 and 21:20. The ride takes just 10 minutes.
Sunset BBQ:
JPY2,500/person for American beef BBQ and JPY3,500/person for Japanese beef BBQ
Reservations required. Contact Reigan Chaya at 087-841-9636.
From 16:00 to 18:00, it’s a sunset Café offering coffee and a sweet for just JPY250.

My Profile
Cathy Hirano キャシー ヒラノ
I've lived in Japan since 1978. After graduating from a Japanese university with a BA in cultural anthropology in 1983, I worked as a translator in a Japanese consulting engineering firm in Tokyo for several years. My Japanese husband and I moved to Takamatsu in 1987 to raise our two children in a slower-paced environment away from the big city pressures. We've never regretted it. I work as a freelance translator and interpreter and am involved in a lot of community work, including volunteering for Second Hand, a local NGO that supports educational and vocational training initiatives in Cambodia, and for the Takamatsu International Association. I love living in Takamatsu.
